Skin care routine for your 50s

During the 50s the skin suffers from dryness, laxity and loss of natural lipids such as ceramides and fatty acids. Thus, the skin becomes thinner, more sensitive and unable to maintain hydration or produce enough collagen, and appear to have visible lines on its surface. Dermatologists explains the reason behind all of this deterioration in the skin health is due to the fall in Estrogen levels during menopause. To rejuvenate the skin of the 50s’ age first it needs strengthening its moisture barrier to enable the skin to bear antiaging products. The following steps are recommended by dermatologists for optimum results:

Cleansing:

Regular cleansing during the 50s is of high importance to remove staked dead cells, dust particles and germs that accumulate during the day in order to prepare the skin to receive skin care products. Choose a suitable cleanser and a makeup remover for your skin type and wash day and night and prior to using skin care creams. To complete the cleansing process use Face Tonic after removing the make up to prepare the skin pores to better absorb the skin care creams.  

Use a cream high in lipids:

To supplement the shortage in the skin lipids apply a cream rich in skin’s own lipids two to three times a day.

Take probiotics rich food such as yogurt:

Probiotics help producing acidic molecules such as fatty acids to restore the pH balance in the skin. This will help the skin to retain moisture and hinder the loss of transepidermal water to hydrate the skin from within and to become supple. Probiotics also help in treating inflammation to protect the collagen and maintain the elastin protein. Fermented foods such as yogurt and kefir should be included in the diet system, or taking a supplement containing “Lactobacillus” and “Bifidobacterium” on daily basis.

Choose oil-based cosmetics products:

At this age it is recommended to use oil based cosmetics products including cleansers, creams, serums, and antioxidants which should be a soothing oil with vitamin C. Oils do not dry the delicate skin like other products do and  deliver moisture boost. It is advised to use oil based sun blocker twice a day to protect the skin from hyperpigmentation and skin cancers.

Use a mild exfoliant:

After strengthening the moisture barrier mild enzyme exfoliants can be gently used again. For best results it is recommended to use it every fortnight. This will help preventing dead skin from building up and making it look older.

Strengthening collagen to treat laxity and lines:

To help curing the face skin from laxity and lines dermatologists recommend the use of cosmetics that promote collagen production such as retinoids, peptides and growth factors. Also look for the retinoid type that has emollient base with built in hyaluronic acid to plump the skin. Retinoids are known to be effective in fighting aging syndromes specially when used along with vitamin A and vitamin C.

Dealing with the brown spots:

Many ladies at the end the 50s start seeing the brown spots along the hair line and across the chest and on the back of hands. To fade the brown spots it is recommended to use a lightener cream containing hydroquinone (HQ), kojic acid and tretinoin. Also the use of high-SPF sunscreen on a daily basis is a must to block the sun rays from darkening the spots.

Massage the skin:

To improve blood circulation in your skin it is recommended to do a daily massage with the help of natural oils such as rosewood oil and orchid oil.
